How to Enable Development Mode in RimWorld Options

Development Mode in RimWorld is an integrated debug suite created by Tynan Sylvester and Ludeon Studios to diagnose pathfinding bugs, test mod scripts, and simulate colony events. It requires no console commands, third-party DLL injectors, or Steam launch flags.

To activate the system, pause your current game and press Esc to open the main game menu. Click on Options, locate the Gameplay settings column, and check the box labeled Development Mode. As soon as you check this option, a persistent row of five small square icons appears along the top-middle edge of your monitor screen.

These five debug icons provide surgical oversight over your RimWorld environment. From left to right, they represent the Debug Log (inspecting background exceptions), the Package Editor, the View Settings (toggling roof view grids, path costs, and room beauty values), the Debug Actions Menu (your primary cheat terminal), and the Debug Logging Menu. You can toggle Development Mode on and off at any moment without needing to restart your game client.

God Mode: Instant Free Construction & Blueprint Powers

The single most popular tool in RimWorld's debug suite is God Mode. When Development Mode is enabled, God Mode can be activated either by clicking the face icon in the top toolbar or using the Debug Actions Menu.

When God Mode is active, placing any structure—such as plasteel autodoors, geothermal generators, hospital beds, or royal throne room drapes—instantly spawns the completed object into the game world at full 100% durability. It consumes zero construction materials from your stockpile and requires zero pawn labor. Furthermore, God Mode completely bypasses technological research locks, allowing a tribal colony to instantly construct spacer-tier charged pulse turrets and microelectronic fabrication benches on day one.

God Mode also provides instant deconstruction. Clicking the deconstruct order on any mountain wall, broken mechanoid wreck, or ancient cryosleep casket dissolves it immediately without waiting for your builders to arrive with sledgehammers.

Spawning Items, Silver, Weapons & Medicine

Colonies frequently collapse due to sudden resource bottlenecks—such as running out of herbal medicine during a plague outbreak or lacking components to repair cooling air conditioners during a 45°C heat wave. The Debug Actions Menu resolves these crises instantaneously.

To spawn items, click the gear/lightning icon in the top toolbar to open the Debug Actions Menu. Click on Spawn Thing, type the desired resource into the search filter, select your item, and left-click anywhere on the map to drop the stack.

Colonist Health, Scars, Bionics & Resurrection

A single stray sniper bullet or scyther blade can permanently blind your primary doctor or sever your master crafter's arms. Rather than managing chronic pain debuffs or mood tantrums, Dev Mode provides surgical remediation tools.

Opening the Debug Actions Menu reveals extensive pawn health utilities. Clicking Heal Random Injury and targeting a wounded colonist immediately removes painful gunshot scars, bruises, and active bacterial infections. If a colonist has suffered complete limb loss, selecting Restore Body Part presents a list of missing anatomy (such as Left Arm, Right Eye, or Liver) and instantly regenerates the biological tissue.

If your favorite colonist is killed during a mechanoid drop pod raid, they do not need to stay dead. Locate their corpse on the battlefield or retrieve them from a refrigerated crypt, select Resurrect from the Debug Actions Menu, and click the body. The colonist revives immediately with full consciousness, retaining all learned skills, personality traits, and ideological beliefs.

Storyteller Control, Raids & Weather Manipulation

Whether you are playing under Cassandra Classic, Phoebe Chillax, or Randy Random, the storyteller engine dictates the frequency of environmental disasters and raider sieges. Dev Mode allows you to override storyteller decisions completely.

Under the Incident section of the Debug Actions Menu, you can manually trigger custom raids using Execute Raid With Points to test defensive bunker designs against 5,000-point tribal swarms or Centipede clusters. You can also immediately end persistent map conditions like volcanic ash clouds and toxic fallout by selecting End Game Condition. If a wild thunderstorm threatens to ignite your wooden crops, selecting Change Weather to Clear halts the blaze immediately.
